I am a descendant of the early pioneer family (JOHN GRAHAM and Catharine "Katie" McCormick of Taynish, Knapdale) that came to Glencoe-Mosa Ontario opening up the counties of Middlesex and Elgin, Canada from Knapdale, Argyllshire Scotland in 1837. I have a very helpful book "The Grahams of Gartmore" written by Dr. Angus Graham in 1948. However what it does not include is: Is there any record of ALEXANDER GRAHAM of Kilberry, Knapdale, Argyllshire, Scotland? Said to be the father of the following three sons:
1) John Graham born abt 1763 who married Catharine McCormick born abt 1767.
2) Alexander Graham who lived all his life in Scotland, but his son, Archibald "Archie" Graham, emigrated to Canada in 1828 and settled in Dunwich Township at Old Iona, and he is the original of the Grahams of Dunwich.
John Graham and Catharine McCormick's son Duncan Graham who had married Catharine McKerral (daughter of Angus McKerral of neighboring Brunerican) in June of 1810 and in the spring of 1830 emigrated from the farm of Kilmoshenachan to Canada, and after landing at Montreal lived for a time being on a farm owned by Mr Reeves near what is now Howick about 40 miles south of that city. Their youngest son Alexander (Duncan and Catharine McKerral) was scalded on the boat on the way over to Canada and died, then Christina the eldest daughter died and the mother Catharine McKerral passed away on May 7th, 1832. All three are buried in lot 15, range 1 in the North Georgetown Cemetery. So a month after his wife's death Duncan Graham left his remaining family and journeyed to the "London District" via Ottawa River, Bytown, Rideau Canal, Lake Ontario, Welland Canal and Lake Erie to Port Stanley, near which place the Talbot Settlement had been located. He took up lot 1, concession 1, Mosa, and made preparation for the arrival of his family.
The following spring they came by the same route, and Duncan (son of John Graham and Catharine McCormick) met them at Port Stanley. Carrying all their worldly goods on their backs, the walked by a blazed trail through the forest from Port Stanley to what is now Glencoe. They stayed the first night at Fingal with John Clark whose wife was a cousin, Mrs. Flora (Graham) Clark, of the Greenshutter-Lobo Grahams.
3) Duncan Graham another son of (Alexander Graham of Kilberry, Knapdale) who married Flora Graham. This couple came to Lobo in 1828 and setled on lot 14, concession 8. They were the originals of Chief Dougald Lobo Grahams.
I would very much appreciate any information regarding this family primarily that of John Graham and Catharne McCormick PRIOR to their emigration to Canada in 1837 as they were aged 74 and 70 at that time. They had followed their son Duncan 7 years after he had left Scotland.
Any information on John Graham's father Alexander and lineage that proves that they are Grahams of Gartmore would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, Heather Daniels daniels228@msn.com
